My time in Journalism.
Journalism was a fantastic opportunity for me to see how different forms of media like video, photo, and writing coalesce into a whole product that informs an audience. Beginning the course halfway through the semester, I had to apply myself so I could have an understanding of the content similarly to my peers. When the time came for me to put work into the Quill Media newspaper, I volunteered to help with the creation of the newspaper layout. Doing so allowed me to work with the technicalities behind design to learn how to navigate a challenging editing program, and see what makes for more engaging visual material. As the course progressed, I began to leave my comfort zone and write stories about the school. This meant having to attend events I would not have otherwise and conduct organized interviews with my teachers and peers. I wrote two stories for the Quill Newspaper; one about the sophomore Model United Nations convention, and one about the brand new Osprey Blocks being implemented at Animas High School. I had to be concise with my writing and be consistent with what I focusing on in each piece. Writing stories about life at Animas High School gave me an appreciation of not only the journalism process, but the school community as a whole. It became apparent to me how essential it is to document the community that has been built at Animas High School and that journalism plays a huge role in how we view ourselves.
While I will unfortunately not be taking classes with the Quill Media next year due to scheduling conflicts, I have made sure that I will be academically challenged in fields involving similar visual media found in journalism. I will begin my year by taking the Documentary Osprey Block with Jessica McCallum and Drew Semel, where my newfound skills in design and communication with the community will be employed to create a refined documentary. I will also be taking the Film Production and Digital Photography courses with Drew. Focusing on all of these opportunities will allow me to hone in on my passion in photography/cinematography and work closely with Jessica and Drew, two important figures in the journalism experience at Animas High School.
